Today we are talking to Dan Taylor, a professional level designer who has in the past worked for Eidos, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Rockstar (among others) on games such as Medal of Honor Heroes 2, Hitman: Sniper, or Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Dan - who started out as a modder for Morrowind, Skyrim, and Fallout New Vegas - has close to two decades of experience in the video game industry under his belt and his talk on Ten Principles for Good Level Design at the Game Developer's Conference 2013 is cu.

I've finally gotten a colony to stay alive under Randy Random's challenging watch, but I've succeeded a little too well. I'm up to 10 colonists, have 5 prisoners, a freezer with hundreds of fine meals and I'm starting to mine out all the far-out pockets of ore I've been putting off.The trouble I'm running into is power. I have five geothermal generators all wired to my colony, using all the steam vents on the map, but I'm still 770W short of my power used.

I have added 10 solar generators and 4 turbines, but at night my power still fails. What should I do? I guess my first question is if there's any trick to wiring I might be missing, I have everything connected in series, I assumed that it doesn't matter what order or how batteries are connected to generators. Much like atmos in SS13, it seems power doesn't actually have flow, it just kind of exists, but I can't tell for certain. If I'm not mistaken about wires, then what other option do I have? I can only build so many batteries and solar panels. Battery array. However, use switch and turn it on only as night begins (or if you want to go out for few hours). This way you are safer than with non-switched array and don't have energy issues. One switch is enough - between one of generators/turbines and whole array.

Give it few days to load from sun turbines, then turn on only at night. When you turn switch on whole power grid merges together removing your problem.Tho if you are really unlucky, try setting every single colonist on '1' priority for firefighting. Ah, clearly I need to learn how switches work. The explanation is vague, and I assumed it turned off everything on the line, definitely not what I need.

I'll try to rewire to create an array like that, I suddenly regret having everything in series. The good news is I went through and made a tally of all my electrical devices, and found whats chewing through my power is the fact I started using Sun Lamps for indoor lighting near decorative hyroponics trays, 10 of them not including the ones on my indoor plots. I'm guessing once I tear those down my problems will go with them. When putting down batteries place two switches on either side, like this:XXX-that way you can wire the power source (XXX's) be it solar power or whatever to your main conduit line, and be able to turn off charging and draining at will.

Let one set fill up then disconnect them, wait for the next set to fill up then see how many sets (I prefer 4's to 3 solar panels and 1 turbine, panels stop the turbine from being blocked) you can turn off and still keep levels at 70% after the night. It also saves you from short circuits, as you can just turn on a fully charged set while your drained batteries recharge without being drained themselves.

Jul 17, 2016  The cooler might not be getting enough power from just one generator, in which case you'll need to make more. I don't use generators like ever, but that would be the only thing I could see.
