But hey, it gets me my weapon. I installed the unofficial patch while playing a level 47 character. The next time I loaded the game a few questlog glitches (unresolvable misc quests) were immediately cleaned up.

Unofficial patches can be installed any time and it's worth it.You can run mods from both simultaneously but it will be easier to manage your mods if you manage them all with the same manager. You might want to try Mod Organizer if you're not already using NMM - MO has a much better/cleaner design in terms of how it applies mods and allows you to do nifty stuff like have different mods installed on different profiles for different save games.
